A UK number for families receiving prison calls
BluePhone gives families their own UK 01/02 number and an app to answer prison calls in, on iPhone or Android, in the UK or abroad.
How it started
BluePhone was started after the founder’s cousin was remanded in a UK prison. The family lived in the Netherlands and received his calls on a Dutch mobile number, so his call credit ran out more than twice as fast as it would have calling a UK landline.
A physical UK line needed a UK address, self-configured internet phone services were complicated, and the services aimed at prisoners’ families did not suit a family abroad. BluePhone was built for that situation: a UK landline-style number, answered in an app, wherever the family is.
What BluePhone is — and is not
- It is a service for receiving calls. It cannot make outgoing calls, call back or call emergency services.
- It delivers calls to the BluePhone app. It does not forward calls to another phone number.
- It is not affiliated with HMPPS, the Ministry of Justice or any prison, and it cannot guarantee that a prison will approve a number.
- According to our terms, BluePhone is a technical service provider rather than a licensed telecoms operator. UK numbers and call delivery are provided through the telecoms carrier Telnyx.

No. BluePhone is an independent service and has no approval from HMPPS or the Ministry of Justice. Each prison decides whether to approve a number.
